I think we had assumed that CG only did stone (very wrong) and that, being local and London-based, we probably couldn’t afford them (also very wrong). A combination of both computer operated stone routers and hand routers are used to shape the edges of the worktop, these are then polished until they are as wonderfully luminescent as the stop surface.Ĭapital Granite was a very lucky find for us: on the basis of her experience a neighbour recommended them for worktops after we told them about our travails finding good but affordable suppliers for kitchen ‘stuff’ as we were trying to put together something that looked custom on a budget. The raw stone is then turned into a granite worktop using special tools and is then cut precisely by a stone mason into its required shape. Colossal slabs are processed in quarries before being taken to a different facility to be cut into thinner blocks, with granite being one of the hardest materials on the planet, a diamond saw is used to cut through it.ĭiamond is also used to polish the granite, giving it its shiny, magnificent finish. The process in which granite has mined has not changed much over the centuries. It is an igneous rock which is formed from magma, which once cooled will become the granite that goes on to feature in kitchens across the globe. Granite is an elegant and relatively rare stone which has astonishing heat and scratch-resistant properties, which make it highly desirable for kitchen worktops.
